「この曲は私の人生の変化について書いた曲。デビューアルバムをリリースしてからクレイジーな日々になった。自分の気持ちを全てさらけ出すことで、精神的に開放感があったと当時に気持ちの整理が大変だった。私のキャリアに何か悪い事が起きると「ワオ、こんなことができるなんて私はなんてラッキーなんだろう。この立場に死ぬ程いたい人は沢山いる。」って思う。それでもトラウマになることを認めないといけないんだけどね。」ーInterview Magazineより

「当時19歳で、人生への熱意とかがあったと同時に、この業界に初めて入って全てが魅力的に見えたの。こんなにもワクワクする出来事や人がいて、オシャレで輝いている新しいオモチャが沢山ある。どこか変で興味深い友達や、誰かが作った私の評判を受け入れようとしてた。よくキャラと実際の性格は分けるべきなんて私自身言うけど、自分の生の感情を晒した個人的な曲で大ヒットすると、何だか変な感覚なんだよね。ある程度のレベルまでは人々に自分を本当に知られていると感じて、それは間違ってないんだけど、親しい友人や家族レベルじゃない。複雑な状況だよね。」ーThe Guardianより

タイトル「Making the bed」は、「ベッドを整える,ベッドメーキングをする」の意味がありますが、「make one’s bed（ある人物のベッドを整える）」という文になると「自業自得」の意味になります。また、後ろに「and lie in it（そしてそこに横たわる）」をつけると、「自業自得なんだから、自分で何としなよ」という文になります。日本語には似たような表現で、「身から出た錆」、「自分で蒔いた種」、「因果応報」、「当然の報い」などがあります。
